THERAPY FOR TEENAGERS

Teen Therapy

Supporting Teens Through Life’s Challenges With Compassion and Expertise

Adolescence is a time of intense growth, exploration, and change. It can also be a time of emotional upheaval, identity struggles, and growing pressure—from school, family, peers, or within. At RK Counselling, I offer a supportive, non-judgmental space where teens can talk openly, build coping skills, and develop the resilience they need to thrive.

As a Registered Psychologist, I provide therapy for teenagers (ages 13+) facing emotional, behavioral, or psychological challenges. Sessions are offered both in-person in Red Deer and virtually across Alberta, depending on what’s most comfortable for the teen and family.

Common Issues Teens Bring to Therapy

Therapy can help teens process difficult emotions and build healthy tools to manage what they’re going through. Some of the concerns I commonly support include:

  • Anxiety, panic, and excessive worry
  • Depression and low mood
  • ADHD (including assessments and day-to-day support)
  • Trauma and grief
  • Self-harm and emotional regulation struggles
  • Family conflict or peer difficulties
  • Bullying or social isolation
  • Gender identity and sexual orientation
  • School-related stress or performance issues
  • Addictive behaviors or unhealthy coping mechanisms

Whether a teen is struggling silently or openly asking for help, therapy can be a valuable resource to gain insight, feel understood, and build stronger emotional foundations.

An Individualized, Evidence-Based Approach

Teen therapy is tailored to the unique personality, goals, and needs of each adolescent. I use a combination of evidence-based therapies that have been shown to be effective with youth, including:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
  • Solution-Focused Therapy
  • Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) (where appropriate)

In every session, I work to build trust, ensure emotional safety, and empower teens to take an active role in their growth.

Supporting Families, Respecting Boundaries

While therapy is confidential, I also recognize the importance of family involvement—especially for younger teens. When appropriate and with the teen’s consent, I provide updates to parents or caregivers and offer guidance on how to support the teen outside of sessions.

My approach is always respectful of a teen’s privacy while balancing their developmental needs and the role of caregivers in the healing process.

A Safe and Inclusive Space for Every Teen

I welcome and affirm all teens, including those who identify as LGBTQ+, non-binary, or who are exploring their identity. Every adolescent deserves a safe space to express themselves, work through challenges, and build confidence in who they are becoming.
